Canada Visitor Visas

Visiting Canada for a short period requires most non-Canadian nationals to apply for a Canadian tourist visa. Canada does permit visa free travel for up to six months for citizens and permanent residents of several countries, however, for those who do not receive this concession, the Canadian tourist visa, a form of Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) grants a candidate a maximum of six months in Canada.

Applying for a Canadian Tourist Visa

As outlined above, a Canadian tourist visa, often referred to as a travel visa or visit visa is not required by all visitors to Canada. Your Global Visas consultant will be able to discuss the requirements of your country of residence with you in an initial consultation. For candidates who require a visa for Canada, the tourist via provides a straightforward rote to Canada which places few requirements upon the applicant and permits them to remain in Canada for a maximum of six months. Unlike longer-term work visas and business visas, the only financial requirement placed upon visit visa applicants is that they must be able to support themselves throughout their stay in Canada. Although a visit visa does not permit the candidate to take up any form of employment whilst in the country, it does allow short term courses of study to be undertaken providing that the duration of the course does not exceed the six-month period of leave granted by the visa.

However, Canadian tourist visas are issued as a strictly temporary visa service and although they may be extended, they do not constitute a route to permanent immigration. Candidates must demonstrate that it is their intention to depart for their country of residence once their visa has expired.

Types of Canadian Tourist Visa

Canadian visas can be issued as single entry permits, for a one off visit to Canada for a maximum of six months, or as multiple entry permits allowing the candidate to enter and depart Canada on multiple occasions. A Canadian transit visa may also be obtained for those who need to enter Canada only to transit through the country.

Single Entry Canada Visitor Visa

Single entry Canadian tourist visas are granted for up to six months, however it should be noted that the actual duration issued will depend upon the decision of the Canadian immigration case officer. In some circumstances a single entry visit visa may be extended by an additional 30 days, however visa extension applications must be submitted at least thirty days before the original grant is due to expire.

Multiple Entry Canada Visitor Visa

A Multiple Entry Canada Visitor Visa is valid for a specified time which should be submitted at the beginning of the application process and allows a candidate to travel in and out of Canada any number of times within this period.

Canadian Transit Visa

Canadian transit visas provide a short-term means of gaining Canadian entry clearance for candidates whose presence in Canada is a necessary part of a longer journey to another final destination. Transit visas are only issued where a candidate will be present in Canada for no longer that 48 hours and where they have no criminal record, do not pose a security risk to Canada, and can demonstrate evidence of their intention to depart for another destination.

Family Immigration

The Canadian visit visa is a strictly temporary immigration service valid for no more than six months and is issued on the understanding that the candidate has the intention to depart on or before the expiry of their visa. As a result, unlike longer-term work visas and business visas, Canadian visit visas do not make provision for the spouse, partner, or dependent children of an applicant to accompany them. All individuals who wish to relocate to Canada for a short time through a tourist visa must qualify and apply in their own right.
