Student Visa for Canada

Applying for a Canadian study visa requires candidates to have a confirmed offer of a place on a course of study from a Canadian educational institution. Canadian study visas are issued as a temporary immigration service, however they can be issued for as long as it takes to complete the course in question and may be extended as necessary.

Canada student visas are issued as a temporary immigration service and although they afford a much greater duration than that of a Canadian tourist visa, they oblige their holders to return home when their grant of leave expires. Like a Canadian work permit, a study visa for Canada does not provide a route to obtaining permanent residency and will not lead to the opportunity to apply for Canadian citizenship.

Canadian Study Visa Benefits

Studying for a short period of time is permitted for Canadian visit visa holders, and provided that their course of study does not exceed the six month duration of their visit visa, the candidate may study in Canada without specifically obtaining a visa for study. However, since many courses will exceed the six month limit and the study visa offers the flexibility of undertaking further courses once in the country, applying for a student visa in Canada is the best option for those wishing to study in Canada.

In Canada, study visas are issued as a temporary immigration service and the duration of the visa is dictated by the length of the course being undertaken. However, a student visa can be extended as required where a candidate wishes to undergo further courses of study and successfully obtains a place on these courses. The duration of a study visa differs where a candidate will be studying in Montreal or in any other city located within the Province of Quebec. In such circumstances the study permit will need to be renewed every year.

Although Canadian student visas do not provide a route to permanent residency in Canada, they do allow candidates to undertake a limited amount of work in campus in order to supplement their income. Working in Canada in positions of employment off campus may also be permitted in some provinces and in Quebec, Manitoba and New Brunswick off campus work may be an option for students who are able to obtain a Canadian work permit in conjunction with their student visa.

Canadian Study Visa – Eligibility

The key requirement for a Canadian study visa is that applicants must be in possession of a confirmed offer of a place on a course of study. Once a candidate is in possession of a letter of acceptance from a bona fide educational institution in Canada they should apply for a Canadian study visa as soon as possible. Candidates will need to be able to show that they have sufficient funding to support themselves throughout their time in Canada and they must also be able to reside close to the place of study. In some cases applicants may be required to undergo a medical examination and since study permits are intended as a temporary immigration service, candidates must be able to demonstrate their intention to leave Canada once their studies are complete.

Additional Information – Applying for a Temporary Resident Visa

In some cases it may be necessary for a student visa candidate to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). Your Global Visas consultant will be able to tell you whether you require a TRV to study in Canada. Find out further information on our Canadian Visa page.
