Australia Spouse Visa
The initial spouse visa in Australia is only granted for a period of 24 months or two years. After that, the applicant must show that the relationship is still a genuine one. This means showing photographs of the two or bank statements that are in both names and many other documents.
Australian immigration under the spouse visa can eventually lead to Australian permanent residence.
Relationship criteria for an Australian spouse visa
The main applicant needs to:
- Be sponsored by an Australian citizen or a permanent resident, or a eligible New Zealand citizen;
- Be married to the sponsor legally and in a ‘genuine, continuous relationship’ which they hope to continue after arriving to live in Australia.
Health & Character for an Australian spouse visa
Australia has very strict health and character requirements that need to be met before any permanent Australia visa of more than one year is granted.
Anyone who attempts to immigrate to Australia on an Australian spouse visa will be have to:
- Undergo a medical examination and torso x-ray by one of a panel of doctors selected by the Australian officials, as well as;
- Get police certificates for all countries that they have lived for more than 12 months in the decade (ten years) leading up to the application for a spouse visa for Australia.
Additional Information: An Australian spouse visa application must be supported by documentary evidence of the spousal relationship. As mentioned above, this includes photographs of the couple, bank statements that show the couple have had one joint-account for the period of time, and various other documents.
